Horses are so often nutritive to those humans who seek out their company. The work of my foundation honors and draws on the seemingly mystical nourishing quality of the horse. This nourishing quality allows bonds to grow between people of diverse backgrounds, serves as a balm for the disquieted soul, and somehow allows even the most lost to feel at home in their presence.

The Bear Spot Foundation

Horses can be co-therapists.

The Bear Spot Farm Foundation to Benefit Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (the Foundation) was established in 2004 to provide therapeutic services for children, adolescents and their families.

Jane Karol, Psy.D. is the Foundation’s executive and program director. She is a psychotherapist with extensive experience treating children and adolescents. She is also an accomplished dressage rider, and has been a professional trainer, instructor and competitor for more than ten years.

The Foundation is based at her Bear Spot Farm, located in Concord, MA.

In her work as a psychotherapist, Dr. Karol began to incorporate equine assisted psychotherapy, in the form of dressage riding and horse care, into her clients’ therapy programs several years ago.

Our Mission

The Foundation’s mission is to bring the profound presence of the horse – the trust he can engender, the joy he can bring and the sense of collaboration and accomplishment that comes from working with such a powerful animal – into a directed therapeutic program. Here, client and therapist draw upon the capability and talents of the living horse.

The Foundation is distinct in the field in the way in which it combines these elements.
