Horses are so often nutritive to those humans who
seek out their company. The work of my foundation honors and draws on the
seemingly mystical nourishing quality of the horse. This nourishing
quality allows bonds to grow between people of diverse backgrounds,
serves as a balm for the disquieted soul, and somehow allows even
the most lost to feel at home in their presence. |
Meet Dr. Karol | Our Program | Meet the Horses | Case Studies Case Study: EileenEleven-year old Eileen grooms Jake with Dr. Karol before a mounted session. Together, they will put on Jake’s saddle and bridle, and then continue the discussion that began in Dr. Karol’s office while Eileen learns how to communicate and work with Jake. Eileen was referred to the Foundation after conventional therapy approaches failed to engage her interests. She says that she looks forward to coming to therapy now even if some of the things she talks about while she is there are very difficult. Case Study: BrianBrian, age nine, was repeatedly ridiculed by his peers at school. He was struggling to develop lasting friendships and expressed feeling very lonely and unhappy. Psychological testing revealed a slight nonverbal learning disability. After developing a relationship with Jake and Dr. Karol, he said, with his arms wrapped around Jake’s neck, “Jake is my best friend.” Dr. Karol believes that through this friendship with Jake and his work with her, Brian will draw upon those connections to develop more lasting relationships with his peers at school. Case Study: TommieTommie gets some helpful hints during her lesson. She developed anorexia at the age of fourteen. Three months at a residential treatment facility helped her immensely, but she required ongoing treatment. She comes to Bear Spot Farm once a week. One-on-one therapy sessions in Dr. Karol’s office, followed by riding lessons, allow her to develop new skills, accept constructive feedback and build her self-esteem. In these sessions Tommie learns how important proper care and feeding are to the Farm’s horses, themes can relate to her own circumstances. She likes to spend time grooming Jake and making him as handsome as he can be. She laughs when she admits that she probably hugs Jake more than she rides him. Disclaimer: |
